Leavenworth Mountain Association - 2014 Framed Photo Invitation from Jay Goodrich on Vimeo.

The Leavenworth Mountain Association invited Jay and 4 other photographers to Leavenworth, Washington, to compete against each other with the final goal of producing a slideshow that highlighted mountain culture. Each photographer had 72 hours to photograph and one day to edit and produce a 2-5 minute slideshow that told a specific story that they had discovered during their visit.

Jay chose to produce a concept that was inspired by the book, All the Strange Hours written by Loren Eiseley. “Eiseley crafts an absorbing self-portrait of a man who has thought deeply about his place in society as well as humanity’s place in the natural world.” With this idea in mind during the entire 72 hour period allotted for the photographing, Jay focused his camera and lenses on a single local athlete and geologist named Rex Flake. In an amazingly similar fashion to the book Eiseley crafted, Rex travels into the natural world in a somewhat solitary fashion. In what an outsider may view as a lonely mountain bike experience, Rex is an unbelievably social guy with twenty years spent in Leavenworth and a core support group of friends that he hangs out with beyond his solo time on the trails.

“The Mountain Bike Paradox” quickly became evident to Jay, the accompanying slide show highlights a paradox between lonely rider and his time with his community. In addition, Jay chose to create a bit of a paradox of his own, showing the viewer images displayed on a screen in a somewhat unethical way. The more you watch it, the more you will see. Enjoy.
